Longwood Gardens is a place of wonder and beauty all year round, but it transforms into something magical during Christmas. The gardens are decked out with thousands of lights, Christmas trees, and other festive decorations, creating a winter wonderland visitors can enjoy. The Christmas light display at Longwood Gardens is one of the most spectacular in the world, featuring over 500,000 lights arranged in intricate patterns and designs that fill the gardens, conservatories, and fountains with enchanting and mesmerizing colors.

Creating the Christmas light display at Longwood Gardens is an exact and time-consuming process. According to Unionville alumni Nicholas Guarino, teams would start to prepare as early as Labor Day weekend. The team responsible for the display begins by planning and designing the layout for the lights, considering various factors such as the layout of the gardens, the trees and plants that will be used, and the overall theme of the display.

Once the planning stage is complete, the team starts hanging the lights, which is a complex one requiring specialized equipment and techniques. Guarino described the most difficult part of hanging lights as learning to climb trees safely, which required physical ability and various knots. For higher places like the tops of trees, the team uses different tools, including cherry pickers and scissor lifts. Some lights are wrapped around the branches, while others are attached using clips or hooks. The team takes great care to ensure that the lights are hung securely and that they do not damage the trees or plants.

While the lights on the trees and plants are a sight to behold, the team doesn't stop there. They also turn lights on the various buildings and structures throughout the gardens, including the conservatories, fountains, and other landmarks, arranging them in detailed patterns and designs that create a stunning visual display that will leave visitors in awe.

Once the lights are hung, the gardens come to life with the dazzling display of lights and colors, creating a magical and enchanting atmosphere that visitors can explore and enjoy. Guarino reminisces on the gratifying feeling of witnessing the awe on visitors’ faces when they walk through the illuminated gardens. They can stroll through the illuminated gardens, listen to live music performances, and enjoy seasonal treats such as hot chocolate and gingerbread cookies. The highlight of the Christmas season at Longwood Gardens is the grand display of brightened fountains that dance to holiday music. It's a truly unforgettable experience that draws visitors from far and wide. The Christmas light display at Longwood Gardens is a true testament to the skill and dedication of the team responsible for its creation.
