Special Olympics is a heartwarming and inclusive program in the district that allows kids with special needs to participate in fun games and activities. Held annually at Coatesville High School, typically around the second Friday in May, the event is eagerly anticipated by participants and spectators.

Mr. Meredith, a dedicated coach for the Special Olympics Team, also serves as a gym teacher for many of the team’s members. These two roles paired together not only allow for sporting advice but also a layer of familiarity and comfort in the coaching dynamic, having closely worked with the kids in advance. With five years of coaching experience, Mr. Meredith expresses his admiration for the supportive atmosphere noting, "there are always people there cheering [the kids] on."

The Special Olympics draws a significant turnout from the district. Participants span various educational levels, from UHS students to those from Patton, or even elementary schoolers. The team conducted their main event of the year a couple of weeks ago, was a resounding success. The kids enjoyed participating in many different activities, including the 100-meter walk, the standing jump, the running jump, and the tennis ball throw. Notably, every participant received a ribbon following each event, regardless of their placement, fostering accomplishment and inclusivity.

Fiona Avondolio, a current junior who volunteers in Special Olympics, explains how she got interested in the sport. She says, "I was on the bocce team this year so I knew all of the students competing in the events. I love spending time with them all and was just really happy to help out where I could and cheer them on." Coach Meredith emphasizes the growing involvement and support for Special Olympics. He recalls instances where regular education students organized fan sections and even secured buses to attend the event, demonstrating a collective effort to uplift their peers. Furthermore, the UHS Bocce Team is also a part of the Special Olympics Program which further underscores the program's expansion and inclusivity.

As the Special Olympics program continues to accumulate support, the genuine kindness and passion of the participants shine through. Both coaches and volunteers find fulfillment in observing the participants' growth and enjoyment, making each event a cherished occasion for the entire community.
