Last year, a new club was added to the wide variety at the high school. The Improv Club, originally created by unionville alumni Hailey Gates and Anusha Mutnuru, has been taken over and renovated by senior Marshall Gantt.
For years, Gantt has been a part of many high school musicals and experienced impressive success in his roles. Over the summer, he went to a camp at Northeastern, where he learned more about improv and was inspired to take it back to Unionville to share it with other students. “I wanted to teach others the skills that I used at the camp, so everyone could have the opportunity to use them,” says Gantt.
Improv Club is a club in which students are free to have fun and be themselves while also learning skills that will aid in their future careers pursuing music and other art-based activities. Gantt’s goals, as he states, are for members of the club “to learn new things, while also being able to be themselves in a fun environment.”
The Improv Club focuses on many methods of developing character analysis, spontaneity, and overall drama techniques that can be used for activities far beyond just improv. This year, Marshall has significantly improved the club by establishing set dates for both after-school and Lunch-and-Learn meetings. These steps have taken last year’s club, which was new and had an irregular schedule, and brought it to new heights under Gantt’s leadership.
Overall, the Improv Club has opened up new opportunities for students to enjoy themselves with their peers while learning valuable performing-arts skills in the process.
