The Technology Student Association (TSA) is a nationwide organization focused on fostering personal growth, leadership, and career opportunities in STEAM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics). With chapters across the country, the organization provides middle and high school students with a wide range of competitive events, networking opportunities, and community service initiatives.
The high school’s TSA Chapter is primarily student-led, with Computer Science teacher Mr. Patrick Sheehan as the advisor and seniors Ishita Saxena and Jennifer Ding serving as Co-Presidents. Saxena states, “The events [run by TSA] go beyond the 'expected' STEM field activities, as they also include Children's Stories, Fashion Design & Technology, and Audio Podcasting, among others.” These competitions encourage creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving while allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios. Through participation, students develop critical thinking abilities and gain valuable experience that can support their future career aspirations.
This year, the TSA club at the high school had a successful Regional Conference, with 26 students in attendance. The students competed against various local districts, such as Lower Merion, Downingtown STEM Academy, and Plymouth Whitemarsh. Despite the fierce competition, 12 students, including one individual and three teams, qualified for the State Conference in April. The qualifying events included Transportation Modeling, Biotechnology Design, Architectural Design, and Music Production. This achievement highlights the dedication and talent of UHS TSA members, as well as the strong support from their advisor, Sheehan. He further supports the club by stating, “It fosters a place to compete and learn in tech and STEM, and offers an outlet for common interests and skills that will shape tomorrow’s workforce.”
To encourage participation from more students, the leadership team, which includes the Co-Presidents, Treasurer senior Navya Nadkarni, Secretary senior Gareth Liu, and Social Media Manager sophomore Tiffany Truong, has held club meetings and bake sales to promote the club, while also raising funds for current members. In the future, they plan on hosting a Stationary Sale and STEM Night.
As shown, TSA offers students a unique platform for growth and achievement in STEAM. With continued participation and support, it can continue to inspire and shape the leaders of tomorrow.
