As the holiday season nears, the Student Council has become increasingly occupied with planning entertaining events and charitable fundraisers. The Council’s latest and most innovative idea this year is a school-wide food drive to benefit Kennett Area Community Service. The goal for the drive is to have every 8th period C-day class raise 40 cans of non-perishable foods, such as jelly, corn, and beans. All of these food items will then go to families in need, allowing them to have a joyous holiday season. To encourage participation among the student body, the Student Council has announced that all classes who collect 40 or more canned goods will attend an exciting volleyball game between the students and the faculty the day before Thanksgiving break. Sophomore Class Treasurer Riley Koetz hopes that this “fundraiser will help others in need and...unite students in giving back to our community.”

To strengthen the school spirit and continue this theme of friendly competition between students, the Council will also host the traditional Turkey Bowl on November 26th. The Turkey Bowl is a flag football game between the 9th and 10th-grade students and is, as Student Council Advisor Mr. Louis Stamis puts it, “a game to prove who the better grade is.” Unlike in a traditional football game, the rosters for the Bowl consist of both girls and boys to ensure equal participation and representation. Sophomore class president Beckett Lim states that he looks forward to students “uniting together and...coming out to watch and enjoy the game.” While the Turkey Bowl does not support a specific cause like the food drive, any profits made during the event are used by the school to fund more lively and entertaining activities.

Some additional events that the Student Council is planning for the winter season include a Powderpuff game and their annual UQuest scavenger hunt. The Powderpuff game will be between the 11th and 12th grade girls and will take place slightly earlier on November 25th due to weather concerns and to increase participation. The Student Council will also organize a unique scavenger hunt in January, in which teams of students submit videos completing sets of hints to earn points. Each hint is incredibly unique, like “What is hiding under your bed?”, and each group can put their own creative spin on them.

As the Student Council works to create engaging and memorable events, they hope that students will actively participate and support their efforts, helping them foster a more spirited and welcoming school community.
